Venue and Hall Hire

Malvern Bowling Club’s hall is one of the best value, small meeting, conference and party venues in Stonnington, and its easily accessible, just 300 metres from Glenferrie Rd.

With a booking you can make use of kitchen, BBQ facilities and outdoor seating area. If you also wish to bowl, please notify us upon making your booking and we’ll provide bowls, jack and mats, plus someone to get you started and teach the basics of lawn bowling.

During the bowling pennant season (late September to early March), Saturday daytime functions are not possible and preparation time for evening functions is restricted to after 6:00 pm. Tuesday daytime functions during this time are not available, but evenings are available with setup able to commence from after 4:00 pm.

Further information:

  • The function space we offer is comfortable for seating up to 80 people and can cater for up to 100 guests for a standing event.

  • We have a licensed bar with qualified bar staff (sorry, our license doesn’t cover BYO alcohol or soft drinks).

  • We have a well-stocked commercial kitchen and you or your caterers are welcome to use our crockery, cutlery, utensils, bowls and trays for your function. Our kitchen includes pie warmer, gas cooktop, gas oven, dishwasher and generous bench space.

  • If your group also wishes to combine hall hire with bowling, Malvern Bowling Club can provide experienced club volunteers to assist with set up and instructions on bowling.

  • Children must be supervised at all times, especially if they are on the bowling green.

  • For evening functions: outside lights must go out at 10:30 pm. The bar closes at 11:30 pm and functions must conclude no later than 12:00 midnight.

  • When you make a booking (either by phone or email) you will be required to make a $100 non-refundable deposit to secure your booking. This will be invoiced to you upon your booking. Please quote the invoice number in your deposit details to us so we can identify the booking. There are no surcharges for credit card use.

And please note:

  • You must leave the clubrooms as you found them.

  • It is of critical importance that our bowling green is protected at all times.

  • The surface of our beautiful green has been meticulously levelled and must remain level. Therefore we cannot permit ‘dumping’ (dropping) or throwing of lawn bowls onto the green and we would ask your cooperation in making sure that your group is aware of this.

  • Only bare feet or completely smooth flat-soled shoes may be worn on the green.

Barefoot and Corporate Bowls

In a world of synthetic everything (including grass!) Malvern Bowling Club still proudly maintains one of Melbourne’s finest bentgrass greens. Bentgrass is widely known as “the supermodel of the grass world”.

And there is NOTHING like the feel of bare feet on soft, lush, green grass, particularly in Spring, Summer and Autumn!

Barefoot bowls at Malvern Bowling Club is the ideal and fun way for any work group to boost morale, build team spirit, celebrate a great working year, de-stress after a tough month or simply enjoy a few informal hours out of the office. The advantages of lawn bowls at Malvern Bowling Club as a form of group entertainment are;

  • Unlike corporate golf days, where people are scattered about the course, with lawn bowls the group is all together, all the time – and easily able to chat, laugh, relax and interact.

  • Lawn bowls is also much more inclusive than golf, as gender, age, cultural background, physical strength, etc, offer no advantage. Very few people can hit a golf ball the first time they try, but almost everyone can successfully roll a bowl along the ground.

  • Living with a disability should not be a barrier to participating in and enjoying lawn bowls. At Malvern, we have mechanical bowling aids, green access is available via portable ramps and our volunteers are experienced in assisting bowlers with a disability to join in the fun.

  • Malvern being a small, single green club, located away from main roads in a residential street, means that there is very little discordant, external traffic or human noise from adjacent activity. And Malvern Bowling Club’s location, just 20 minutes’ drive from the CBD and a 10 minute walk from Malvern Train Station and Glenferrie Rd trams in Melbourne’s leafy inner east, makes it easily accessible.

  • Our small, but clean, kitchen is also for hire and is caterer friendly if you’d like to feed the troops while playing.

  • We have a large barbeque adjacent to the green and our licensed bar, operated by club volunteers, is well stocked with beers, wines, cider, ‘cruisers’, spirits and soft drinks.

You can also combine green hire with hire of our adjacent hall for meetings, presentations and conferences. For booking information, click here.

When you book a rink this includes bowls, mats and jacks, plus assistance and support from a volunteer club member or two, to help set you up and teach the basics to anyone in the group who’s never bowled. There are strictly no high heeled shoes allowed on the green.

Bar Facilities

We have a fully fitted bar with cash register, two fridges and a serving counter. We have qualified bar staff to help you run your event. You will need to notify us if you wish to have the bar available. We can run a tab or a pay-as-you-go system.

We have a well-stocked commercial kitchen and you are welcome to use our crockery, cutlery, utensils, bowls and trays for your function. You can bring in your own caterers, self-cater, or we are happy to refer you to reputable local caterers who are familiar with our kitchen and venue. Please note that unfortunately we cannot accommodate bucks, hens, 18th and 21st, parties.
